Meet the Class!

A List of Responses

I thought it might be nice if the class got to know one another a bit. Here are the summaries and bios I have received so far. Let us know who you are!

I came to UH in 1986 from Massachusetts. As a student at Michigan State University I had a double major in philosophy and psychology. My hobbies include gardening and murder mysteries, and I'm a cat lover. You can find pictures of my cats on my web pages. Perhaps you would be surprised to learn that I am an avid horror movie fan (and of course, a fan from the very beginning of the X-Files. My most interesting recent trip was to Aberystwyth, Wales, and before that, to a lot of places in Australia, where I was particularly interested in learning about Aboriginal art.

I am a student at UH with a major in math. I will double major in philosophy also; however, it is not official yet. I am a senior but also a full-time worker on campus. I like my job on campus so I will probably continue on my studies for a long time. When and if I finish with my math and phil. degrees I was thinking about taking English courses for a year or two as an English major. I am not sure about my future except that I have a great desire to move from Houston and live somewhere different for about five years. Hopefully I will be able to find a teaching job, if not anything else will do. I like cats and animals. I walk and bike alot. Other than that I just read and study.

I'm a senior philosophy major. I moved to Houston (my husband graduated from law school and got a job here as an attorney) in 1992 from Cambridge, MA, and enjoy life here despite sorely missing the beauty of Boston, being able to walk everywhere, and having four distinct seasons. Wherever I've had close friendships, I've been happy, so geography isn't all-important. I'm passionate about classical music (I studied piano for 17 years), art (both viewing and executing), and reading (sci fi, mysteries, and 19th c. European literature, but I confess that studying philosophy has rather severly limited my time for "pleasure" reading!). I would love to pursue a PhD in philosophy and teach, but I'm unsure that I have what it takes to contribute academically. Maybe I'll give up and be a wedding coordinator instead!

I was born in Grozny the son of poor Russian wheat farmers and was recruited by the KGB at the age of ten to spy on the rebellious pre-teens that Breshnev was sure would overturn the revolution. Then, when I was thirteen, I read Huck Finn and fell in love with the idea of finding America myself while rolling down a mosquito infested river. OH RUSSIA HOW I LONG FOR THEE! Or,

I was born in Philadelphia two years before the bicentennial, moved to Indiana in time for the Boring Era to begin and now live in Houston against my will. Because of my interest in the sentence (I'm a creative writing major) I think that all of the people we've read so far, except Emerson and William James, should be arrested for lack of clarity. My hobbies include sweating and swatting mosquitoes and I want to be the best comic novelsist since Philip Roth. Now Vee may perhaps to begin yes?
