This course will cover chapter 17 through at least chapter 38 in
Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 3rd edition, by Fishbane, Gasiorowicz, and Thornton,
Prentice Hall Publishing. This is the last semester that this book will be used. The pace
will be frenetic; we will cover on average 1.5 chapters per
week. There will be three one hour exams: one at the end of chapter 20, one at
the end of chapter 27, and one at the end of the course. The exams will take
place on Friday evening at 5:30 PM in room 105 SEC, dates to be determined (Save
your Friday nights for me!) The final will be comprehensive and will be given
in room 105 of SEC on Friday, Dec 7, 2007, from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. No
calculators or notes will be permitted during any examination; paper will be
provided, so you only need to bring with you to each exam a pencil and an
eraser. Each exam and the final will emphasize two important areas:
your problem solving skills, and your ability to memorize and
regurgitate the relevant definitions and formulas that are covered in class.
In addition to the 42 regular class meetings scheduled for the course, 13
additional meetings have been arranged to provide an opportunity to go over
homework problem solutions and exam solutions. These meetings will take place
at 8:00 AM on Wednesday each week in SEC105. Attendance at these "extra"
class sessions is, of course, not mandatory. Attendence at the regularly scheduled
class meetings IS required, however. One point will be deducted for each absence from the
Total grade (see below) before the final grades are computed. Ten absences will reduce
your grade by one letter, typically. Plan on attending class and taking good notes.
A list of homework assigned from
each chapter was passed out in class and is reproduced below.
The homework will be collected at the
next class meeting following
completion of the chapter. Each problem will be graded on a scale of 0 to 3.
A 5 point penalty will be assessed for homework turned in late. No late
homework will be accepted after the problems have been worked in the 8:00 AM
extra session. The homework assignments are:

The formula used to compute your grade is
Total= [HWyou/HWmax X 20
+ (Q1you/Q1ave + Q2you/Q2ave + Q3you/Q3ave) X 15
+ Fyou/Fave X 35] X Fudge
where Fudge is the factor required to make the average of the Total
distribution 65 (+/-). Note that the quiz portion
accounts for 45% of your grade, the homework accounts
for 20% and the final for 35%. The Fudge factor is the knob that I
turn to shift the grade distribution higher or lower relative to the
letter grade cuts. The average starts off at 65 and the initial guess at the grade cuts
are 90 A, 85 A-, 80 B+, 75 B, 70 B-, 65 C+, 60 C, 55 C-, 50 D+, 45 D, 40 D-.
If natural clumping leads to a fairer distribution after slight adjustments to
the grade boundaries, that will happen,
After each set of papers is graded, I will enter the grades into the computer
and print a set of summary sheets showing the grades and standing of each
student. These sheets will be posted outside room 528 of SR1.
To protect your privacy, the grades will be identified only by the last five
digits of your student number. If you do not wish to have your grades
displayed, please provide me with a signed note so indicating and I will omit
your data from the printouts. Note that these printouts provide you with
valuable information on your relative standing in the class, which ultimately
determines your final grade. By reviewing your posted grades throughout the
course, you can avoid a nasty surprise at the end of the semester.
My office hours are: 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM on Mon, Tue, Wed, and Fri except for
the time I'm in class (MWF 9-10 and MWF 11-12). Thursday I'm at JSC all day.
