UH Writing Center/Law Center Writing Support Partnership

In order to identify students who might need extra help with their writing, incoming first-year UHLC law students produce two writing samples during orientation and the first week of class. Based upon the results of an assessment of those samples by Writing Center raters using rubrics designed by Writing Center pedagogy experts and Law Center faculty, some law students are invited to work with trained writing consultants as they adjust to their first semester of law school. Working through an individualized work plan designed to improve confidence and proficiency while meeting the more complex requirements of legal writing, students clear the program when they demonstrate improved writing capability.
