BIOE 1397/1197: Intro to Biomedical Engineering
This undergraduate Biomedical Engineering course requires students to attend an individual
consultations with a specialized WID writing consultant to discuss their major course writing assignment.
Assessment measures include an on-the-spot survey administered at the conclusion of each writing consultation,
as well as beginning- and end-of-semester questionnaires.
CHEE 4361: Chemical Engineering Practices
Student project teams within this senior-level Chemical Engineering course participate in group consultations in order to
receive guidance on how to clearly articulate their ideas and effectively revise their work. Consultations cover
multiple stages of the writing process and use various technical reports as their subject matter.
CIVE 3332: Engineering Materials
Students in this course attend multiple individual consultations to discuss their major course
writing assignments. Students are assessed through on-the-spot surveys administered at the conclusion of
each writing consultation, as well as beginning- and end-of-semester surveys designed to explore student
attitudes about writing, gather feedback on the achievement of course goals, collect general demographic
information, and identify the ESL population of the course.
CIVE 4312: Civil Engineering Design Project
CIVE 4312 students attend two individual consultations with specialized WID writing
consultants over their major written reports. Assessment measures include on-the-spot surveys administered at the conclusion of each writing
consultation.
ECE 2100: Circuit Analysis Laboratory
Students in this engineering lab are required to attend a single individual consultation with a specialized WID
writing consultant to discuss their major course writing assignment. Students are assessed through on-the-spot
surveys administered at the conclusion of each writing consultation.
ECE/MECE/INDE 4334: Senior Design
Students in these multi-departmental Capstone courses attend an individual consultation with a
specialized WID writing consultant before submitting their major individual writing assignments.
During the individual consultations, students receive guidance on how to clearly articulate their ideas and
revise their work. This partnership has involved multiple assessment measures including on-the-spot surveys
about the consultation process, writing sample analysis, and beginning- and end-of-semester surveys.
ENGI 2304: Technical Communications
Students in this sophomore engineering course attend multiple 30-minute individual consultations with specialized WID
writing consultants to discuss their two major course writing assignments: a proposal and research report.
Assessment measures include on-the-spot surveys administered at the conclusion of each writing consultation that provide students
an opportunity to reflect on the consultation process and assess consultant performance, student writing
confidence, and whether the student is likely to continue to utilize Writing Center services.
MECE 2361: Mechanical Engineering, Design 1
Students in this sophomore-level design course attend five 90-minute interactive technical
communications workshops during lab sections. Topics include instruction on proposal, progress report, technical report,
and abstract writing. Students are assessed through beginning- and end-of-semester surveys and targeted focus groups.
