Step 3. Lexical Connections Between Sentences
You
can tie sentences or paragraphs together by repeating certain key words from
one sentence to the next or from one paragraph to the next. The repetition of words and synonyms in a paragraph assist a reader to
see the connection between the sentences
and help to enhance a reader’s understanding of what you have written. This repetition of key words also helps to emphasize
the main idea of your essay.
However,
repeating words or phrasing well needs skill and practice. After all,
repetition of unnecessary words makes for the problem
of wordiness and redundancy. To prevent repetition from becoming dull, you may
use:
- Synonyms (help, assist, aid,
support)
- Variations of
the word
(golf, golfer, golfing)
- Pronouns (professors… they)
Following the strategies listed in this section will help you to establish the links that readers need. By doing so, you will tie sentences, ideas, and details together smoothly and clearly, which will enable your readers to follow along easily.
