The Women’s Issues class at the Graduate College of Social Work undertook an advocacy project entitled, The Power of ONEsie. This is a project sponsored by the advocacy group MomsRising.org committed to the expansion of family-friendly benefits to assist families today as they struggle to combine commitments to work and family.
Graduate students at the GCSW decorated a cute one-piece baby clothes, a “onesie” with requests for help for struggling families of all incomes, races, political affiliations, and configurations. The core issues that Momsrising.org advocates spell out MOTHER:
M – Maternity and Paternity Leave
O – Open, flexible work
T – TV We Choose and Other After-School Programs
H – Health Care for all Kids
E – Excellent Childcare
R – Realistic and Fair Wages
About a dozen students in the Women’s Issues class taught by Beverly McPhail made the onesies in class one night after a lecture on the issues faced by women working outside fo the home. The onesies were displayed for a week at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and then for a week at the Women’s Resource Center. Their next stop is Washington DC were they will be displayed in a Mother’s Day action demaning more support for America’s family.
