New Report on Wage Gap                                  

 The American Association of University Women released a new report on the pay gap this week.             

The report, entitled Behind the Pay Gap, reveals that just a year out of college women earn 80% of what their male counterparts earn.  However, ten years after graduation women fall further behind, earning only 69% of what men do. The research shows this gap exists despite the fact that women outperform men in school.  Even controlling for hours, occupation, parenthood, and other factors that affect earnings, the research indicates that one-quarter of the pay gap remains unexplained and is likely due to sex discrimination.

The report also found:

• Ten years after graduation, women are more likely than men to complete some graduate education. 
• Men and women remain segregated by college major, with women over represented in education majors and men making up 82% of engineering majors. This segregation continues in the workplace. 
• Women who attend highly selective colleges still earn less money than men from either selective or moderately selective colleges and about the same as men from minimally selective colleges.
