Aishah Shahidah Simmons is an award-winning African American feminist, independent documentary filmmaker, television

and radio producer, published writer, international lecturer, and activist.   Since 1992 she has used the written word and the

camera lens to make a central impact on the intersections of oppressions on the lives of Black women.

Her previously completed and internationally acclaimed short videos, Siience . . .  Broken, and In My Father's House explore the

issues of race, gender, homophobia, rape, and misogyny.

Alice Walker, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Color Purple says,

"If the Black community in the Americas and in the world

would save itself, it must complete the work NO! begins. 

 

The documentary was eleven years in the making and explores how the collective silence about acts of rape and other forms of

sexual assault adversely affects African Americans while simultaneously encouraging dialogue to bring about healing and

reconciliation betweeen all men and women.

Directions:  From I-45 take Spur 5 and take a right at the first light, which is University Drive.  Free parking is on the right

in Parking Lots 20A and 20C.  You must then walk across Calhoun Street and straight down University Drive, which

dead ends into the Cullen Performance Hall.  If you wish to park closer, paid parking is available at either the Welcome

Center at the corner of University and Calhoun or in the underground parking under the Hilton hotel. For futher directions,

Take Back the Night March, April 10, at 6:15pm.

Take Back the Night Logo

     The annual Take Back the Night March is being held in conjunction with the

      NO! documentary event.  It is April 10 from 6:15pm until 7:00pm.  The march

      starts at the University Center and then marchers will go to the Towers and then

      on to the Quads and then end at the Cullen Performance Hall for the big event:

      NO! The  Rape Documentary.  Wear red for the march to show your support for sexual

      assault victims and survivors.  The first 100 marchers will receive a free t-shirt. 

      This part of the evening is being sponsored by the Cougar Peer Educators.
