Documentary Days

movie image

Every other Wednesday at 1:00pm we will screen a documentary film and serve popcorn and sodas.  The films often address issues of gender, race, class, and sexual identity. Check with your professor to see if you can get extra credit for attending. Many professors are willing to do that if the topic is class related. The films selected are often connected to current events or monthly recognitions, such as Black History Month or Women's History Month. Click here to check out our current film schedule

My Safe Campus

Do you have a concern about the University of Houston that you would like to anonymously report? Perhaps the incident involves sexual harassment or assault, fraud, burglary, or an ethics violation. The University of Houston participates in the My Safe Campus anonymous reporting program. In addition to, or instead of, reporting to our campus Department of Public Safety, you can make an anonymous report to My Safe Campus. The report will be forwarded on to the appropriate campus personnel and acted upon. You can check back through My Safe Campus to see how the report was resolved. Let's keep our campus safe. If you know something, say something. Click on the link above to make a report or call the hotline phone number at 1-800-716-9007.

Of course, always feel free to call our UH Department of Public Safety. For an emergency call 911 and for non-emergencies call 713-743-3333.

The Red Flag Campaign

red flag display

Last October the WRC is sponsored The Red Flag Campaign, a public information campaign on dating violence. Although the month of October has passed, the issue needs continued attention. Did you know that almost one-third of college students report dating violence by a previous partner and almost one-fourth report violence by a current partner? Dating violence can include coercion, stalking, jealousy, isolation, victim blaming, and emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. If you see this violence taking place in a friend's relationship:

Speak up - When peers say things that support disrespect or violence, choose respect and speak up for what's right.

Step in - When one person is mistreating another verbally, physically, or emotionally, step in politely to stop the situation, if it is safe to do so.

Talk later - Sometimes it is better to wait and talk to the abuser or the person who is being abused later, in private. The person may be less defensive and talk more openly in a one-on-one conversation.

Gather Resources - You may want to contact a campus dating violence program or sexual assault crisis center or community non-profit off campus to gather information about what to do next, and to seek support for yourself. Click on "Stop the Violence" below for local links.

Look out for the red flags and posters that will be on campus later in the month. Also, check out The Red Flag Campaign online. Check out these helpful handouts:

Rape Aggression Defense

Photo of a RAD training exercise

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program taught by UHDPS officers empowers female students, faculty, and staff to combat various types of assaults by providing them with realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. This empowerment is taught through four basic principles: education, dependency on self, making one’s own decisions, and realization of one’s own power. For more information, click here.

photo of Dr. Maria Gonzalez

Dr. Maria C. Gonzalez

Associate Professor

Director of Upper Division

Department of English

Dr. Maria C. Gonzalez joined the University of Houston’s Department of English, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, in the fall of 1991. Prior to coming to be on faculty at UH, Dr. Gonzalez received her Ph.D. from Ohio State University and her BA and MA from Our Lady of the University in San Antonio. She is a professor of Mexican American literature, American literature after 1865, Women Writers, Feminist Theory, and Queer Theory.

When asked the following questions, here are her responses:

Why did you choose your academic discipline?

“I was interested in expanding my writing skills and decided to major in English.  I minored in Political Science to address my interest in government.  I had assumed I would probably go to law school but once I concentrated my work in English, I wanted to do graduate work in the field.”

What is your teaching philosophy?

“In recognition that all students come to my class from different places, I attempt to create an atmosphere where each student can demonstrate their strengths and address areas that need development.  Lecturing is an aspect of learning but discussion and engagement by students is my priority.  I want and expect all students to engage the class as we talk about the literature or theory.”

What are your research interests?

“I am currently working on an institutional history of Chicana/o literature.  Attempting to show important intellectual paradigm shifts in Mexican-American literature, my research is focused on some of the grand narratives Chicana/o literature has explored over the last four decades.”

What are your goals for the future?

“As with all scholars, complete my next book is one of my main goals.  I also hope to continue to develop new courses and help others develop new courses in the English department so that our curriculum remains rich and diverse.”

What are some words of encouragement or advice you would give to students?

“Introduce yourself to as many professors as you can.  Come in and talk with us during our office hours about the course but also about what you would like to get out of the course just for yourself.  Get to know a professor every semester.” Her advice is vital. First of all, students will do better in school and because students will need letters of recommendation after they graduate.”

What is something most students do not know about you?

“I am a very active political volunteer in Houston.”

Dr. Maria Gonzalez’s strong and dynamic personality is not only seen in the classroom, but in all aspects of her life. Her passion for fairness fuels her drive to stand up for all the UH community, regardless of who the individual may be. Dr. Gonzalez is truly a unique professor with a big caring heart. The WRC thanks you for being the voice of equality and acceptance!
