Welcome Back

Whether you are a new Coog or have been at the University for a few years, the University of Houston wants to give you a warm welcome. During the Weeks of Welcome, numerous departments and staff will work to connect students with university resources, student organizations and the surrounding community. The Weeks of Welcome start Thursday, August 17th and end Sunday, September 3rd, 2017. With activities ranging from a big student organization fair in Cat’s Back, to a chance to learn more about the city of Houston during MyUH, MyHouston to Cage Rage at TDECU stadium, there is something for everyone! #UHWOW17.

Hurricane Harvey Update:
As you know, Hurricane Harvey impacted the university, in addition to the millions of people that call Houston home. Several UH WOW Signature Events have been rescheduled to the following times. More information about the university’s response to Hurricane Harvey.

Cultural Taste of Houston

The Cultural Taste of Houston provides students, staff, and faculty the opportunity to experience the richness of flavors and sounds from the city of Houston. On display will be a variety of different cultural restaurants from around the city of Houston providing samples from their vast menus. Cultural pop up shops will also be on display for attendees to experience a variety of trinkets from vendors around the city. Plus, performances representing a host of nations from around the world. The Council for Cultural Activities, alongside several departments, is hosting this inaugural event as part of the Weeks of Welcome. Attendees also get a free shirt! Please come out and enjoy the different and beautiful cultures that are represented around our beautiful campus and our amazing city!

First Lecture

Start the school year off right with a motivational lecture by nationally recognized civil rights and social justice advocate Lateefah Simon. A former high school dropout and teen mom, Simon became the youngest woman to win a MacArthur Genius Grant for her work with a California nonprofit dedicated to helping young girls on the streets and in the criminal justice system. She now serves as president of the Oakland-based Akonadi Foundation, which provides grants and other advocacy in support of racial justice. She has driven rave reviews for her presentations at other universities. Sponsored by the UH College of Education, the seventh-annual First Lecture event is designed to inspire students to build community and dream big. No cost to attend. Doors open at 10am Door prizes awarded.

Red Zone is a period from the beginning of the fall semester to about Thanksgiving break when sexual assaults on U.S. college campuses seem to spike. At the Red Zone event student will be able to sign a pledge to acknowledging that they are aware that sexual misconduct rates are high during this time and also to take a stand against sexual violence. Departments will come together to help students become knowledgeable about the resources available to them before and/or after sexual misconduct occurs.

Come meet the members of Alpha Rho Chi: Cleisthenes Chapter, the professional organization for those studying architecture and the allied arts (including engineering and fine arts) for a night of competitive fun! Our social begins by meeting at 8:15PM on the first floor of the College of Architecture and Design where we will provide free carpooling to the Galleria's ice rink. Entry will be $5 when meeting at the college, $10 for anyone going straight to the Galleria. Bring your game face and fighting spirit for this ultimate, icy challenge!
