Lightfootʼs poetic journeys have been told with such timeless, thought-provoking songs as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” “Early Morning Ran,” “Carefree Highway,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” and many more.

Combined with his rich, warm voice and nimble guitar technique, Lightfootʼs songwriting talent has led him from the 1960s coffeehouse scene in his native Canada to pop chart hits with his ground-breaking multi-platinum albums and accolades that range from five Grammy nominations to 17 Canadian Juno Awards. He was honored as a charter member of Canadaʼs Walk of Fame and recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

  • The Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, is the free, contemporary arts gallery on campus. Blaffer’s ambitious program includes six to eight exhibitions and publications a year, many premiering at the museum before traveling the world. Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston exhibitions feature regional, national and international contemporary art.
  • The Moores School of Music is at the forefront of music schools today. With its 80-member faculty and more than 600 music majors, the Moores School’s primary purpose is to educate and train professional performers and teachers, but it also serves the community at large with public concerts and class offerings. Staff and faculty are eligible for discounted tickets for most performances.
  • The School of Theatre and Dance offers a full season of theater and dance performances each year. With Tony award nominated faculty, and nationally renowned dance faculty, the program provides an opportunity to see wonderful works on stage. Discounted tickets are available for faculty and staff for most performances.
  • The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts is an interdisciplinary collaboration in the performing, visual and literary arts. From its base on the UH campus, the center offers public events residencies and courses that fuse artistic disciplines, ignite dialogue and present new ways of experiencing the arts in contemporary life.


University of Houston Athletics is the home of a wide variety of team sports played on campus, including football, men/women’s basketball, baseball, track and field, volleyball, soccer and softball. Tickets to most of these events are available at a discount to faculty and staff.

Campus Services

  • The University Center and Associated Facilities provide a host of services for employees on campus, including a campus bookstore, a hair salon, restaurants, a convenience store, game room, creation station, lounges, meeting rooms and other amenities. 
  • The University of Houston Police Department is made up of commissioned police officers who are granted the authority and responsibility to investigate all crimes occurring on campus. The police department offers services such as jump starts, tire assists, gas assist and unlocks as well as security escort services for students, faculty and staff.
  • Dining Services provides healthy and convenient dining options on campus. Faculty and staff are eligible to enjoy the savings of a dining membership plan, allowing them to eat at any of the dining facilities on campus.
  • The Women’s Resource Center provides a comfortable place where faculty, staff and students can come to seek information on a variety of topics, obtain confidential referrals to appropriate campus and community resources and discuss issues of concern. Nursing and lactation rooms are also available on campus.

Child Care

  • The Child Care Center provides exemplary early childhood education for the children of students, staff and faculty at UH, by offering a model program tailored to ensure the quality of a child’s daily experiences while building a foundation for future learning.
  • The University of Houston Charter School  is an innovative elementary school (kindergarten through fifth grade) focusing on the constructivist approach to education. The school provides student-centered curriculum that enhances the intellectual development, technological fluency and leadership abilities of students.

Development & Enrichment

  • Continuing Education offers corporate and individual training on a variety of topics, including language classes, business and professional training, healthcare training, personal enrichment, job readiness and occupational skills, teacher/educator programs, technical training and test preparation. Some discounts are available for faculty and staff.
  • The College Program is an educational benefit that allows full-time employees who have completed at least six months of employment to have release time from work to attend a college class.
  • Training and Professional Development is provided through the UH SkillPort eLearning system. Over 2500 titles are accessible over the web for free for all students, faculty and staff. Courses include a variety of knowledge areas, including: communications, consulting, customer service, finance and accounting, human resources, leadership, management, marketing, process improvement, project management, quality management, strategic planning, information technology and team building.
  • University Libraries offer a wide array of research opportunities on campus for faculty and staff. The University of Houston houses eight libraries, including: Art & Architecture, Conrad N. Hilton College Library, John O’Quinn Law Library, Music Library, Optometry Library, Pharmacy Library, M.D. Anderson Library and Special Collections.
  • Private Music Instruction is available through the Moores School of Music Preparatory and Continuing Studies. The program features exemplary music education from Moores faculty and students, area music specialists and guest clinicians from around the country.
  • KUHT TV – Houston PBS, located in the Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on campus, is the local PBS affiliate. Its mission is to educate, inform and entertain the people of southeast Texas. It was America’s first public television station.
  • KUHF: Houston Public Radio is a fully professional radio service affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR) and certified by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Its mission is to entertain, educate and inspire its audience through informational and cultural programming.


  • The Campus Recreation Center is a state-of-the-art fitness center available to faculty and staff at a reduced rate. It provides a host of services, including: aquatics and safety classes, group exercise, intramural sports and outdoor adventures. The facility has basketball/volleyball courts, badminton courts, racquetball courts, squash courts, an indoor track, fitness area, locker rooms, leisure pool, climbing wall, dry sauna, hot tub and a child care center.
  • Outdoor Adventure offers indoor climbing, equipment rental, group facilitation and organized outdoor trips.

Health & Wellness

  • The University Eye Institute offers services that range from complete vision exams to the medical and surgical management of eye disorders. Its nationally renowned vision professionals use advanced diagnostic instruments in over 80 exam rooms and 30 specialized testing areas. Faculty and staff receive fee reductions for primary examinations and optical materials.
  • The Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic is a United Way Facility that offers services to infants, children and adults with speech, language and/or hearing impairments. These services include testing and treatment. The clinic also offers assistance with the fitting and sales of hearing aids.
  • The University of Houston Health Center offers general patient services at an affordable cost to UH faculty and staff members.  The Health Center Pharmacy is able to fill prescriptions from faculty/staff members' current physicians.   • The Wellness Center is a campus-wide education and prevention program. Services include sponsoring campus wide events, offering workshops and speakers on many wellness topics, supporting a peer education program including academic credit and certification options, and supporting student learning by serving as a resource for wellness information.
