The University of Houston is excited to launch the Peer Body Project for the 2018-2019 academic year through a collaboration with UH Wellness, the Women and Gender Resource Center (WGRC), and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).  This unique program consists of four weekly discussion groups designed to help young women resists cultural pressures to conform to the appearance idea standard of female beauty and reduce their pursuit of this unrealistic idea.  The Body Project is an evidence-based prevention program, with research showing that it helps to reduce thin ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, and other eating disorder risk factors amongst participants.

As part of our launch, we are seeking 8 to 10 undergraduate facilitators to lead these discussion with their peers throughout Fall 2018 and Spring 2019.  Peer facilitators will receive direct training from the Body Project and will be supervised by staff from UH Wellness, WGRC and CAPS – selected facilitators will be required to attend in-person training on-campus on Thursday, August 2nd (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) and Friday, August 3rd (9:00 am to 5:00 pm).  Additionally, a video conference training will be held on Friday, August 24th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Facilitators will assist with recruitment of participants throughout the year with our an anticipated start for our first discussion group in late September or early October.

The facilitator application can be accessed here, and is due by 5:00 pm on Friday, May 25th.  Questions can be directed to Dr. Patrick Lukingbeal, Director of UH Wellness, at plluking@central.uh.edu
