UH Web Update - Frequently Asked Questions

As the University of Houston evolves, so too will its online presence and its role as a cost-effective communication resource for the Cougar community. A team from UH Web Technologies and UH Marketing worked with key audiences on and off campus to gain insightful feedback to make the UH website more user-friendly. Key features and information for each audience will be easier to find. The new UH homepage and gateway pages will launch in mid-September.

When will the updated UH home page and gateway pages launch?
The planned launch is mid-September of 2012. Subsequent phases will launch at later dates that are yet to be determined.

What types of changes will be made to the UH web site?
The design of the UH website is being updated and will feature a crisper, cleaner presentation with less clutter and more clarity in navigation. The new UH web site will accommodate current monitor sizes and resolutions. Branding elements, such as colors, logos and fonts, will reflect the current UH brand. Key features and information for each audience will be easier to find on the home page and gateway pages. The changes have been planned to make the UH website an even more helpful resource for students, potential students, faculty, staff, alumni and many valued friends of the University.

Phase 1 updates include:
•    Updated home page features and usability
•    More focus on announcements, news & events
•    More streamlined navigation
•    Improved search function
•    More user friendly audience gateway pages
•    Addition of home page calendar

Phase 2 planned updates include:
•    Greater ease of usability for alumni audiences
•    Enhanced continuity throughout the UH website
•    Fewer PDF’s and greater focus on best practices

Why are we updating the UH web site?
As technology and the University of Houston evolves, so too will its online presence. A team from UH Web Technologies and UH Marketing continually make proactive efforts to improve the UH web site for its many users.

Where can I find the links and drop down menus that were previously on the UH home page?
Most of the information you are accustomed to finding on the UH home page is still in usual easy-to-find menus in the main navigation bars placed near the top of the page. Many of the links that were not in the main menus or those that were found in the “quick links” section before are now located in the footer, which is now the repository for links to resources such as the UH Library, Parking, Academic Calendar, Directories, Policies, Legal info, etc. Putting these often-used resources in the footer made them easier to find.

How do I find the list of links to the college sites?
The list of links to the UH college sites is now located in the Academics menu item, under “Colleges.”

How did you decide what changes to make?
A team from UH Web Technologies and UH Marketing worked proactively with key audiences on and off campus to gain insightful feedback to make the UH website more user-friendly while keeping costs low.  Many different information-gathering avenues were used; a heat map of the home page, web usability testing with multiple audiences, web traffic analytics, and surveys. The results of this research and cost assessment guided the changes you’ll see.

What audience is the UH Home page intended for?
The UH home page is unique shared resource that meets the needs of multiple audiences. UH students, potential students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members and friends of the University all visit the UH home page to learn more about the university and seek different types of information at different times. The evolving design of the home page meets the more frequent and immediate needs of each of these valued audiences.

What will change on my college/department pages?
When the new UH Home Page launches, certain CSS programmed updates will also occur on all college and department pages in the UH CMS. The headers and footers will change to match the new header and footer on the UH home page, except the college or department (where available) logo will be included. Also, all the “rounded corner” design features will become squared corners. Some fonts may change. All of these updates are automatic, so there is nothing you need to do. All content on your web pages (text, photos and images) will remain the same.

My college/department pages are not in the CMS. How do I update my headers and footers?
The necessary html code will be made available to colleges and department that are not in the CMS and are duplicating UH headers and footers so that they can update their pages. If you would like to acquire the html code or have other questions about UH headers and footers, please contact the UH web team at webteam@uh.edu.

Will the UH home page feature and SPIFF areas still be available for submitted material? If so, how do I submit content?
Yes, the home page feature, as well as the three “SPIFF” (special interest feature) areas will still be available to display appropriate material submitted from UH constituents. To submit a photo, text or link for the UH home page feature or SPIFFS, please use the this form. UH Marketing & Communication will review all submitted materials. New photo dimensions will be shared as the new home page launches.

Will the UH home page events calendar be available for submitted material? If so, how do I submit content?
Yes, the UH home page events calendar will be available to display appropriate material submitted from UH constituents. To submit an event for the UH home page events calendar, please use the calendar event form. UH Marketing & Communication reserves the right to review all submitted materials.

Will the UH home news section be available for submitted material?
The content in the UH home page news section is pulled from official UH press releases within the CMS. There is not a process available to submit additional press releases at this time. What is AccessUH as seen on the top, right corner of new home page?
