*Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo. 16r. Misdemeanor in a Serjeant at arms convicted for a practice and abuse of his mace and trust by pillory. John Price, one of Her Majesty’s Serjeant at arms, and two others being brought to the bar as prisoners from the Marshalsea, were convicted upon an information of Mr Attorney’s for practicing to get a warrant from Sir Francis Walsingham for the arresting of one Parsons a Jesuit, and having obtained the same did thereby search diverse gentlemen’s houses and extorted money from them to a great value to keep them from appearing before the Council, alleging that the charges of the Serjeant’s fees and their charges otherwise would be great whereby they got much money, which practice and extortion and abuse of his mace and trust they were adjudged to pay £100 a piece, to stand on the pillory at Westminster and in every place and county where they so searched, to acknowledge their offences and to remain prisoners until satisfaction made. Easter 25 Elizabeth  A Pardon. This defendant discharged of his fine and corporal punishment by the Queen’s pardon after his conviction yet ordered to make restitution before his enlargement. The defendant Price, his pardon being read in open court was allowed him as to discharge his fine and corporal punishment; but the court was of opinion that the restitution which he was to make by the sentence of the court was out of the compass of his pardon and therefore ordered him to remain in prison until he had good restitution to every person grieved. Easter 26 Elizabeth (kk)

Aprice et al, defendants, upon an information at Mr Attorney’s suit, convicted for forging an acquittance and for perjury to witness the same; for this, 100 marks fine, Fleet and pillory, ears nailed and to go up and down Westminster with papers declaring their offences. • Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo.
