*Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo. 28r. A prisoner in the Tower for treason by Her Majesty’s mercy punished by fine by the Lords of the Council. The Lord Lumley being prisoner was called by special commandment of Her Majesty before the lords of the Privy Council in the inner Star Chamber where he was charged that he advised the Duke of Norfolk to take and keep the Tower against the Queen and for having secret conference with one Ridolfi, a traitor escaped beyond the seas, and receiving letters from him; which he acknowledging and promising to become a loyal subject, the Queen was pleased in clemency to deal with him thus favourably, and not to arraign him for treason as she might and so fined him at £1000 and restrained to his house.
