There are a number of scattered Elizabethan Star Chamber cases which relate to early coal mining in Heaton, Northumberland. This is an attempt to provide a summary and in due course to provide a timeline for the events they relate to.

    • 1 August 1595 - date on which Randall Fenwick claims in his answer (STAC 5/L45/17) to have been granted a lease of Heaton Banks by Robert and/or Henry Mitford
    • 17 September 1595 - date on which Randall Fenwick claims in his answer (STAC 5/L45/17) to have sent George Wane and Robt Fenwicke onto the grounds at Heaton Banks to dig & get coals, and while he, along with Lyonell, Oswall, Gerrett and John Fenwicke were at Jesmond, the workmen George Wane and Robt Fenwicke were attacked by Willm Dent, George Dent, John Dent, Isack Woodrington, Robt Spower, John Strangishe, Edward Whyt and Robert Brigges, friends & servants of Raphe Lawson. Following which, when Randall & his colleagues arrived, Willm Dent et al discharged their guns & shot arrows at them.
    • 9, ,10, 11 & 12 December 'last past' (dependent upon date of Bill in STAC 5/L45/17, likely 1595, possibly 1594) - Randall Fenwick et al repair to Jesmond & send Robte Fenwicke brother to the said Randall, George Wawne and Willm Back and others into Byker Moor to dig coal.
