Nicholas had allegedly fraudulently entered into a statute merchant bond at London for £60 to William Paynel without William Paynel's knowledge and without Nicholas having any prior debt to him and Nicholas had then taken the bond with the statute merchant seal and his own seal attached (which would normally have gone to William Paynel) and then had sold lands and tenements in Old Sleaford to William le Clerk in fee simple and put him in seisin. Once the term for payment mentioned in the bond had passed Nicholas had gone to William Paynel and obtained an acquittance of the bond for a payment of forty shillings. He had then (evidently acting in the name of William or as his agent) obtained a certification of the unpaid debt (from the London statute merchant registry) and taken it to chancery and obtained a writ for his own arrest (not acted on) and to put himself in seisin of the lands he had sold to William le Clerk to hold until he had levied the debt of £60 (execution to levy a debt under statute merchant extended not just to lands held at the time of the execution but also any sold or given since the date of the original bond). William had only recovered the lands by payment of another £10 to Nicholas. King's Bench was ordered to investigate. William then makes a count putting dates to the various stages of these events and nIcholas simply denied them [http://aalt.law.uh.edu/E2/KB27no228/aKB27no228fronts/IMG_0057.htm] PAB</ins></div></td></tr>
