  • Case Book BL Harley MS 2143 fo. 16v. Conspiracy Sir Robert Stapleton and others convicted for a conspiracy to accuse the Archbishop of York of adultery. Sir Robert Stapleton et al, convicted upon an information at Mr Attorney’s suit for a notable conspiracy and practise in accusing the Archbishop of York to have committed adultery with Ann Sisson at Doncaster by conveying her into his bed chamber at midnight, which was done by them purposely to slander religion, and to get by that means great sums of money from the Archbishop rather than he would have his name questioned, the which they did to the value of £900 and that chiefly by the persuasion of Sir Robert who had feignedly pretended love to the Archbishop: for which offences standing confessed by some of the defendants and other proofs they were committed to the Fleet for three years’ space, and at the Queen’s pleasure afterward, and Sir Robert left at the Queen’s pleasure to be degraded of his knighthood and to pay £3000 fine and to ask the Bishop forgiveness upon his knees openly at an assizes, and the other defendants two of them to lose their ears on the pillory, and five pounds fine and £300 fine of the other in regard the first confessed the offences, and all to make restitution of the money so by them gotten and to remain prisoners until the money were restored and the order performed.
