Notes, Additions and Corrections

  • STAC 5/F22/7 - Interrs refer to assizes at York & bargain between Richard Robson late of London & Edward Stiringe. Deponents from Hilderthroppe & Wilstroppe in Yorks.

ODNB Grey, Arthur, fourteenth Baron Grey of Wilton (1536–1593), lord deputy of Ireland and soldier by Julian Lock “Grey of Wilton's answer was to ambush Fortescue in Fleet Street with a party armed with clubs, at the end of November. Interpreting the privy council's order literally, after knocking Fortescue down, Grey of Wilton continued to belabour him, ‘calling him villayn and sayinge youe wold pay him and have your penyworthes, not ceasing untill the cuggill was taken owt of your hande’ (TNA: PRO, STAC 5, F24/31). He was sent to the Fleet prison. He was fined £350 and released in May 1574.”
