7 April 1560 From my Lord his Grace and the Counsell here, to Mr. Secretarie

From the Duke of Norfolk's Book of Entries.

I RECEIVED presently Lettres from my Lord Gray, whiche I send you herin closed; whereby ye shall partly perceive, the Frenche Braverie and the hott Skyrmyshes afore Leghe; and also suche Conference as hath passed between the Quene Dowagier and Sir Ja. Crossts, and Sir G. Howard. It seameth by the same, that she could be contente, to have this Matter taken upp, and to wynne Tyme by Treatie: Whereof as we think it good, that she shuld not have Thadvauntage; so if she will accept suche reasonable Offers as have ben made unto here, we thinke the Matter might be well ended. But forasmuche as she seameth to doubte what Suertie cann be made unto here of Subjects, that have given Hostages upon a Contract made with a Forrein Prince, we doubt whether she meane to com to any suche ende or good Conclusion, as may be for their Sewertie and the Fredom of Scotland; which neverthelesse we refer to be considered by your Wisdoms there. And as we shall hier more of the Matter, you shall be further advertised; praying you that for our better Procedings therein, we may understand the Quene's Majestie's Pleasure with suche spede, as the Case requyreth. At the wryting hereof arrived here the Hostages; praying you to remember our former Request for their better Education.
