28 March 1560 From my Lord his Grace to Mr. Secretarie

From the Duke of Norfolk's Book of Entries.

YOU shall receyue herewith suche Lettres as cam to my Handes Yesternight, from Thomas Randall. And likewise Yesterday the Trumpet which I sente to the Quene Dowagier of Scotland retorned hether, and one of here Trumpetts with hym, sent from here with suche Lettres addressed to me, as I send you herewin And this Day I have retorned here Trumpett, and have sent with hym the Pursyvant at Armes of this Towne with my Lettres to the said Dowagier; the Copie whereof you shall receive herwith. Which Lettres and Copie, I have thought good to send unto you, to Thintent ye may the better understand my Procedings in that Behalf; thinking it good to wryte to the seid Dowagier nowe, that my Lord Graye, with the Quene's Majestie's Armye, is presently to enter into Scotland: For that, by myn Instructions given by the Quene's Majestie, and signed with here Highnes Hande, I am dyrected so to do, as by the same may appere unto you. Our seid Armye by reason of the late comynge of the Treasure, which was two Dayes hinderance unto us, could not set forwards asore this Daye, but nowe they marche on, and woll this Night incampe at Dunglas, and so direct their Journey, I truste they woll kepe the Day appointed with the Duke of Chastellerault and the other Lords of Scotts; which, as I understand, are assembled with their Powers, and comyng forwards: But whether the Erle of Huntleye be arrived with them or nott, I cannot tell; for sum saye, that he hath sent his Sonne before with his Power, and will himselfe cum after. Mr. Winter is appointed to receive the Hostages, and to send them hither in one of the Quene's Majestie's Shipps: And if the Wether had not ben sumwhat stormye, and the Winds contrarye, I thinke they had ben here er this tyme. And I have taken Order with my Lord Gray to receive of the seid Duke and the other Lords of Scotland, the Confirmacion of the Articles signed and sealed by them; and thereupon to delyver unto them the Quene's Majestie's confirmacion under the Greate Seale; which could not be done before the Entree of the Armye, because the same was so late depeched from you. And so, &c.

Tho. Norffolk.
