UH Participates in Grand Opening of University Center at Harlingen

HARLINGEN, Texas, Aug. 24, 2011 – University of Houston College of Technology Dean William Fitzgibbon will attend the grand opening ceremony Aug. 31 for the University Center at Harlingen, a multi-institutional teaching center (MITC) designed to provide Rio Grande Valley students access to junior and senior level academic courses.

UH is one of several academic partners at the center, where some courses will be taught in part by instructors online or through videoconferencing. The center, located on the Texas State Technical College campus, will host a variety of bachelor, master’s and doctorate degree programs from UH and several other universities.

Besides UH, the other academic partners are University of Texas at Brownsville, University of Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Our Lady of the Lake University, Wayland Baptist University and LeTourneau University.

The study programs will be designed to complement the academic programs offered at TSTC in Harlingen. Students can earn their first two years of college credits at TSTC and then transfer to one of the programs at the University Center. Enrollment, however, will not be limited to TSTC students.

UH instructors in the College of Technology will help teach undergraduate courses in retailing and consumer science, organization leadership and supervision, chain supply and logistics and human resource development. Masters-level courses include technology project management and human resource development.
