Retired UH Psychology Professor Lynn Rehm Passed Away

Former University of Houston psychology professor Lynn Paul Rehm passed away Sept. 29 at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif. He was 69 years old.

Rehm retired from UH in 2009 after being celebrated by colleagues and former students with a Festschrift. That year, Rehm was honored with lifetime achievement awards by the Houston Psychological Association and the Texas Psychological Association during a joint meeting of both organizations. At that meeting, he was presented with a proclamation issued by Texas State Representative Garnett Coleman. A portion of this resolution read as follows:

“Whereas Dr. Lynn Paul Rehm has had a profound impact on both the scientist and practitioner components of the field of psychology; and he is most deserving of the illustrious recognition he has attained; now, therefore, be it resolved.”

Rehm arrived at UH in 1979, bringing to campus his research interests in depression. He also brought new perspectives to the university’s psychology department, revising the curriculum for its clinical training program and later creating the Psychology Research and Services Center (PRSC).

At the PRSC, Rehm’s Depression Research Clinic provided insight into a complex and much misunderstood ailment. Rehm and his students also investigated depression in veterans, cancer patients, children and other groups.

“Dr. Rehm’s career accomplishments are the very embodiment of the scientist-practitioner creed that guides professional psychology,” said Robert McPherson, executive associate dean of the College of Education.

Rehm is survived by his wife Susan; daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah; sons-in-law Gary Friedman and Keith Roberts; and grandchildren Jackson, Eleanor and Meredith. He also is survived by his mother Bernice and siblings Allan, Leonard and Donna.

A celebration of Rehm’s life will be held Nov. 13 at his home in Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lynn P. Rehm Graduate Student Scholarship Fund at UH. Make checks payable to the University of Houston.
