UH System Board of Regents Schedules Special Called Meeting

October 9, 2008

The University of Houston System Board of Regents meets at 9:30 a.m., Friday, in the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion, second floor of the M.D. Anderson Library. In this special called meeting, regents will receive a report from the Commission on Expanding Access to Higher Education. The 17-member commission was formed to examine how The Victoria College, UH-Victoria and Victoria ISD programs were addressing state and regional goals to strengthen the PK-16 pipeline and thereby expand access to higher education and enhance student success.

The commission's work, which included a series of public hearings, led to consideration of future steps these institutions should take to meet these goals, including downward expansion at UH-Victoria. The commission concluded that downward expansion, which would allow UH-Victoria to add freshmen- and sophomore-level classes to become a traditional four-year university, is a key component to expanding access to higher education and enhancing student success. Regents are scheduled to vote on the proposal at Friday's meeting. The agenda is available online.
