If you’ve broken that New Year’s resolution to lose weight or get in shape, don’t worry. The Department of Campus Recreation is doing all it can to help faculty and staff get physical this year.

The department recently launched its first Cougar Distance Challenge. The low-cost program encourages employees to increase their physical activity by walking 10,000 steps per day, according to Vyckie Avila, assistant director of marketing and membership for the department.

She added that Campus Recreation will provide equipment and support to assist walkers in reaching the goal. Participants will receive pedometers to record the number of steps they take daily, a weekly fit tip, two physical assessments and an introduction packet.

The program, which ends March 18, costs $7 for Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC) members and $10 for nonmembers. The registration deadline is Feb. 8. For more information, contact Monique Budd 713-743-9503.

But, that’s not the only way the department is assisting faculty and staff. Employees can take advantage of a free trial membership to the CRWC through Jan. 31. A Cougar 1Card must be presented.
