The Department of Marketing in the University of Houston’s C. T. Bauer College of Business has been deemed one of the 10 most productive in the country, according to a list published in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The ranking, compiled by Academic Analytics, cites the Bauer department for faculty members’ contributions to books and journals, as well as citations and financial and honorary awards. UH was rated ninth. Pennsylvania State University (Smeal College of Business) and the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) placed first and second, respectively, with Northwestern University (Kellogg) third.

Edward Blair, chair of the Bauer marketing department, noted that this ranking is “just one example of Bauer’s excellence in marketing.” UH doctoral students have won the international Howard Award for best dissertation in the field of marketing twice in the past decade. Also, Bauer marketing faculty sit on the editorial boards of leading journals, and the department hosts an annual symposium of doctoral research attended by other outstanding schools.

“We have had an active, high quality research environment for many years, and that gave us a foundation of excellence,” Blair said. Financial gifts to Bauer have allowed the school to build on that excellence and add highly productive faculty members, he added.

Academic Analytics’ Faculty Scholarly Productivity (FSP) Index measures scholarly productivity for entire departments, not for individual faculty members. In its third year of analysis, the FSP Index has expanded its data-gathering program to include information from more than 160,000 faculty members based at 375 institutions and representing 172 academic disciplines at more than 7,400 Ph.D. programs throughout the country. UH was third in the country for the number of journal publications per faculty member, fourth for citations per faculty and fifth for the percentage of faculty with a journal publication.

The ranking is the third national honor the college has received recently. Princeton Review also listed the college’s Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation No. 2 among the nation’s undergraduate business schools in Entrepreneur magazine.
