UH Business Students Compete in National Case Study Seminar
The seminar, to be held Friday and Saturday (March 30-31) in Scottsdale, Ariz., is sponsored by the Deloitte Foundation through contributions from retired partners of the Deloitte U.S. firms.
The six colleges and universities participating in this year’s competition are Florida A&M University, University of Houston, Miami University, Michigan State University, University of Southern California and the University of Washington.
Members of the winning team will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Second-place team participants will earn $500 scholarships and members of the four other finalist teams will win $250 scholarships.
“The National Student Case Study Seminar remains an important learning experience that gives our future accounting talent the opportunity to tackle the same complex issues that members of our profession face every day,” said Shaun Budnik, president of the Deloitte Foundation and partner of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP. “Under the guidance of experienced educators and accounting practitioners, the seminar helps students hone the skills that are critical for success in a real-world working environment – a command of the material, the ability to research and analyze technical issues, working collaboratively as a team and effectively presenting their work.”
In the seminar, each student team solves accounting cases with the support of a faculty adviser and a Deloitte & Touche LLP manager. The teams present their cases and solutions to a panel of active and retired partners, who play the role of senior management or the audit committee of a client company. At the seminar’s conclusion, the group of partners selects the student teams who best identify the relevant accounting issues and effectively present their case.
The members of the University of Houston’s C. T. Bauer College team were selected from a local competition featuring seven teams. Members of the winning team, who are all juniors, are Don Diehl, Jessica Fung, Drew Haney, Emram Khan and Ann Tran. Their faculty adviser is Michael Newman.
