BOTT’S ADVISING LEADS TO CHEMISTRY BOOM

Simon Bott’s enthusiasm for chemistry has been described as infectious. As director of undergraduate affairs and advising in the chemistry department, Bott has taken the number of chemistry majors from 100 to 300 since he started in the position five years ago, so it isn’t hard to see why. Now, UH has the second-largest number of chemistry majors in the state.

Off campus, he is known for his unwavering support for the chemistry profession, serving as a national councilor for the American Chemical Society. He also formed student teams to visit local K-12 schools to give chemistry shows, provide help with science fairs and offer technical assistance to teachers.

Bott’s achievements have been recognized with the 2008 Provost Faculty Advising Award, which includes a plaque and a $1,000 stipend.
