MCFARLIN SCORES HIGH IN TEACHING HYBRID CLASSES

A professor in the College of Education department of health and human performance, Brian McFarlin channeled his passion for research and detail to create a class that appealed to the way today’s students learn. That passion has earned him the Teaching Excellence Award.

McFarlin’s hybrid kinesiology class uses WebCT, a tool called VISTA and PowerPoint, to deliver the course and student discussion online. Avatars — an animated likeness of McFarlin — make class announcements and soon may serve as a Frequently Asked Questions area. Students access the material at their own pace. To date, they score a letter grade higher on material than their counterparts in traditional classes.

Recipients of the Teaching Excellence Award receive a trophy and a $5,000 check. Nominees must demonstrate excellence in teaching.
