NEWMAN’S PASSION FOR TEACHING GOES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Michael Newman says he sees his students “as my clients and even my ‘kids.’”

That devotion to teaching is what prompted UH to honor the visiting assistant professor of accountancy and taxation with the Teaching Excellence Award for nontenure faculty.

Newman, the Bauer College of Business director of accounting programs, gives students extra credit for volunteer work that puts their new-found skills into practice while helping others. For example, his students teach business and accounting classes to local high school students through Junior Achievement.
“I was deeply humbled and moved when my students nominated me,” Newman says. “I am truly honored that they felt and continue to feel this way about me, but I honestly never expected to receive this prestigious award.”

This award recognizes outstanding teaching by faculty instructors, clinical faculty, research faculty, artist affiliates and lecturers. The recipient receives a $5,000 prize and a trophy.
