Eric Bittner
JOHN AND REBECCA MOORES PROFESSOR
BITTNER’S RESEARCH
AND TEACHING A WINNING COMBINATION
Since joining the faculty in 1997, Eric Bittner has garnered numerous
accolades, including a 2000 early CAREER Award from the National
Science Foundation and a 2007 Guggenheim Fellow.
Bittner, professor of chemistry, adds another honor—the
John and Rebecca Moores Professor—to his list of accomplishments.
Bittner’s nominator wrote that as a UH faculty member, “Professor
Bittner’s seminal work on trajectory-base methods for performing
quantum mechanical calculations has generated considerable excitement
in the theoretical chemistry community.”
Since 2003, Bittner has published or has in press more than 40
papers in top-ranked, peer-reviewed journals as either the principle
or corresponding author.
Bittner, who earned the first Guggenheim Fellow at UH in nearly
20 years and was one of two chemists receiving the award in 2007,
also excels in the classroom.
“In the era where teaching has been watered down to placate
students, professor Bittner held the line in his courses,” one
supporter wrote in a letter. “Despite his high expectations,
students respond well to him.”
This five-year renewable award is given to faculty who are outstanding
in teaching, research and service. The recipient is awarded a $10,000
annual stipend.
