Kenneth L. Brown
FACULTY AWARD FOR MENTORING
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENTS
ANTHROPOLOGY PROF UNEARTHS
STUDENTS’ ANALYTICAL SKILLS
Kenneth L. Brown enjoys prodding his students to help
them discover and sharpen their critical-thinking and research skills.
Judging by the success of many of them, the professor of anthropology
has done just that in his 30 years of teaching and mentoring at UH.
His dedication to his students has earned him the 2007 Faculty Award
for Mentoring Undergraduate Research.
Brown offers students opportunities to present papers at professional
meetings and to write reports and publications. He also includes his
students in excavations of sites such as the Jordan Plantation in
Brazoria County.
“It’s a fun and exciting experience to watch students
as they develop a thesis on the beliefs and behaviors of people from
what is essentially trash,” Brown said.
The $5,000 award honors the practice of mentoring undergraduate research
and scholarship.
