GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT AWARD

MORE THAN JUST BUNSEN BURNERS,
COMPETITION FUELS MAHFOUZ’S LABS

Tarek Mahfouz’s upper-level biochemistry lab classes consist of more than beakers and test tubes.

For his outstanding presentation of material in biochemistry lab, Mahfouz received a Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. His teaching philosophy requires that students present concepts to each other, play games and participate in various competitions throughout the semester. Mahfouz’s devotion to his students led him to help students outside office hours and even hold discussions via e-mail past midnight.

“We would have games and various competitions throughout the semester that kept everyone on their toes, while pushing everyone to do their best,” wrote one student in an evaluation. “His class was not just the most fun, but the most educational class I have attended by any TA.”

Mahfouz receives a $1,000 check and a trophy.
