COMMISSION ON WOMEN KICKS OFF
PILOT MENTORING PROGRAM
The University Commission on Women is launching a pilot mentoring
project for staff and new faculty members. The commission is
recruiting ten mentor/protégé pairs. Training
for the project will occur on Thursday, Jan. 11. After participating
in the training, mentor-protégé pairs will meet
at least monthly.
The commission is recruiting both new faculty and staff members
who are beyond their probationary periods as protégés
and long-time staff and faculty members as mentors.
“Although some colleges already have faculty mentoring
projects in place, often the focus is on the tenure process,”
said Beverly McPhail, Women’s Resource Center’s
interim director. “In contrast, our project is focused
less on achieving tenure and more on alternative skills and
goals.”
Staff members who want to advance within or outside of their
departments or gain additional knowledge about working within
the university environment are encouraged to be a part of this
project, she said.
To be considered for a mentor or protégé position,
an appropriate application form must be completed and returned
to McPhail no later than Dec. 1. Applications and other forms
are available at the Women’s Resource Center’s Web
site at www.uh.edu/wrc.
