The University of Houston was a hotbed of activity this summer
with workshops, art exhibits, theater productions and conferences.

MAY
Barbara Keyfitz, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Mathematics,
received the 2006 Esther Farfel Award, the highest honor UH
bestows on a faculty member. Keyfitz was one of 18 faculty members
honored for their work at UH.

UH awarded Doctor of Humane Letters degrees to U.S. Secretary

The M.D. Anderson Library opened its exhibition “Penguins,
Pulps, and Pretty Ladies: A History of Paperbacks.” The

Gov. Rick Perry named Welcome W. Wilson Sr. and Jim P. Wise,
both alumni of the C.T. Bauer College of Business, to serve

Tung Manh (Tom) Ho, journey locksmith in Residential Life and
Housing, received the 2006 Charles F. McElhinney Distinguished
Service Award. Ho was one of eight staff members recognized
for their dedication to the university.

The Houston Alumni Organization launched UH Alumni College:
Beyond the Horizon. During this one-day event, alumni and friends
of the university took courses in literature, economics, engineering
and history from some of UH’s best known professors.

Administrators announced a new program that guarantees admission
into all UH System universities to all Houston-area community
college students who sign a joint admissions contract during
their first year in college and complete the academic associate’s
degree in good standing. The program starts this fall.

UH System Chancellor Jay Gogue presented a study that details
the UH System’s $3 billion annual financial impact and
the extent of its community outreach and partnerships.

UH launched the Graduation Pledge Scholarships program, which
rewards students for maintaining steady enrollment while remaining

Professor Raymond T. Nimmer, the Leonard Childs Professor of
Law at the UH Law Center, was named the center’s interim
dean.

The Jump program kicked off. The program allowed selected incoming
freshmen the opportunity to take their first two college courses
for the price of one during a five-week session this summer.

JUNE
The School of Theatre presented its annual Children’s
Theatre Festival. This year’s productions included “Cinderella”
and “The Elves and the Shoemaker.”
The 2006 Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival was
held from late May to early July. The festival brought a collection
of internationally renowned musicians to campus, as well as
some of the world’s most promising music students.

The UH Global Energy Management Institute sponsored a conference
titled “How Will New Power Technologies Transform the
Electricity Market Place?” on campus.

The Graduate School of Social Work’s Office for Drug
and Social Policy Research hosted the National Hispanic Science
Network’s Summer Research Training Institute on Hispanic
Drug Abuse.

JULY
The National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded a three-year, $1.5
million grant to the UH Office for Drug and Social Policy Research
to study substance use and other health consequences among Katrina
evacuees living in Houston.

The School of Theatre and the city of Houston presented the
Houston Shakespeare Festival in Hermann Park’s Miller
Outdoor Theatre. This year’s productions were “The
Tempest” and “Titus Andronicus.”

AUGUST
UH deployed Google as it search engine on the university’s
Web site. Google delivers more accurate information faster than
the previous search engine.

UH unveiled its University of Houston Magazine, which replaces
Collegium and includes more alumni, student and faculty accomplishments

The Texas Workforce Commission awarded $1 million to the technology
college to develop a new biotechnology baccalaureate program.

Donald L. Birx was named UHS vice chancellor for research and
UH vice president for research. He has most immediately been
the interim vice provost/president for research and professor
of physics at New Mexico State University.
