Some may find the sound of bowling balls colliding with pins
a little noisy, but it will be music to the ears of University
of Houston students.
From 2 – 6 p.m. Friday, April 21, UH Games for Scholars
will offer faculty, staff, students and the Houston community
an opportunity to raise scholarship dollars by participating
in a non-competitive bowl-a-thon in the University Center’s
Cougar Lanes.
Canteen, UH’s vending provider, is putting up $6,500
to create student scholarships. UH Business Services is hoping
to raise an additional $3,500 through UH Games for Scholars
to reach the endowed scholarship goal of $10,000.
To participate, a team (consisting of at least four people)
must raise at least $80 in donations. Team members are encouraged,
however, to raise as much money as they can as prizes will be
awarded to the top individual fundraisers.
The person who raises the most money for Games for Scholars
will receive a $150 gift certificate from Best Buy. A second
place prize will be a DVD player. Everyone who participates
will be entered into drawings for Cougar Cash that can be used
at UH dining facilities and campus convenience stores and Flex-Awards,
which can be used for purchases at the UH Bookstore, dining
facilities and vending machines among other campus locations.
All participants will receive free Games for Scholars T-shirts,
gift bags and free refreshments provided by Aramark, Canteen
and Coca-Cola.
Faculty and staff teams will bowl during one hour blocks scheduled
from 4 – 5 p.m. and 5 – 6 p.m. to avoid any work
conflicts.
“It doesn’t matter how good of a bowler you are,”
said Emily Messa, director of business services. “Raising
scholarship dollars is at the heart of this event, but it’s
also important that everyone has a good time while doing it.”
Donations must be submitted to Messa in Room 325 of McElhinney
Hall by Thursday, April 20. For reservations or more information,
call 713-743-8184 or 713-743-8761.
