In February, the University of Houston African American Studies
Program will host a variety of events in honor of Black History
Month.
Black History Month dates to 1926 when Carter G. Woodson, the
son of former slaves, launched Negro History Week, an initiative
to being national attention to the historic contributions of
blacks throughout American history. February was chosen for
Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of Frederick
Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, men who have greatly influenced
life for African Americans.
