Sometimes, being ready can mean the difference between life
and death.
To prepare University of Houston faculty and staff members
for potential office and classroom emergencies, UH’s Department
of Public Safety (UHDPS) will offer an adult cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) course from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thursday,
July 28 in the UHDPS station. Training will be conducted by
UH Police officers Lt. Derrick McClinton and Jeremy Johnston.
This class is limited to 12 people as Red Cross stipulates
that CPR courses contain six students for every one instructor.
All courses include an instructional video presentation and
training with a mannequin to simulate a person in need of CPR.
“We use the mannequin to teach people how to deliver
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions,”
McClinton said. “Faculty and staff also will learn what
kinds of signs to look for if they think someone is having a
heart attack.”
Recently, McClinton and Johnston shared their life-saving knowledge
with the Houston Children’s Museum staff members teaching
them how to perform CPR on children. Both officers also have
trained staff members at UH-Victoria and UH System at Sugar
Land.
CPR training also is available for colleges, departments and
offices by request.
To schedule CPR training for a department, contact McClinton
at 713-743-0593 or at dmcclinton@uh.edu.
“An emergency situation can happen at any time and at
any place,” McClinton said. “We hope that our courses
can teach people how to react during a crisis and to be aware
of the things that can be done to save a life.”
