Faculty, staff and students aren’t the only ones who
have taken notice of the University of Houston’s state-of-the-art
facilities. The American School & University (AS&U)
magazine recognized four UH construction projects in its annual
Educational Interiors Showcase competition.
UH’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, the University
Center Satellite renovations, the M.D. Anderson Library renovations
and the Roy Cullen Building’s classroom renovation project
received honors in this competition. They are among 100 nationwide
educational facilities to be spotlighted in the August edition
of AS&U magazine.
“We submitted projects to this competition that we felt
made a difference on this campus,” said Dave Irvin, associate
vice president for plant operations. “We never dreamed
that all of the projects that were submitted would be honored.
We’re thrilled that out of hundreds of submissions reviewed
in this competition, four of UH’s projects were recognized.”
In addition to the UH projects, UH-Clear Lake’s new Student
Services and Classroom Building and UH Downtown’s Commerce
Street Classroom Building were also acknowledged by AS&U
as exemplary construction projects.
All projects were judged on design excellence, educational
functionality, budget and innovation.
“Having these projects recognized in this national competition
speaks volumes about UH’s dedication to its students,”
Irvin said. “There’s been a significant commitment
by this administration to provide students with superior facilities
that enhance their learning experiences.”
For 75 years, AS&U has reported on construction, maintenance,
planning and design of educational facilities. Since 1983, the
magazine has sponsored competitions that call attention to groundbreaking
classrooms, labs, schools and other structures.
