STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD
VIETNAMESE REFUGEE SAYS
GRATITUDE INSPIRES HER
In 1979, Anna “Cuc” Nguyen fled Vietnam with her husband
to build a life in the United States.
“A lot of people died at sea, but we were lucky,” said
Nguyen, head cashier at the College of Optometry’s University
Eye Institute. “I am so grateful to the United States. I was
given a good job, and that’s why I try my best and work hard.”
Her commitment to her job and UH has paid off. She is a recipient
of a 2005 Staff Excellence Award.
Nicky R. Holdeman, University Eye Institute director, noted that
Nguyen is a gracious and loyal employee.
“Mrs. Nguyen was awarded a College Service Award several
years ago that included a $50 prize,” Holdeman said. “Instead
of keeping the money, she opted to return the funds to help support
indigent care. This is one of the many acts of kindness she has
shown to her colleagues and our patients over the years.
