GEORGE MAGNER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
IN UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING
LORENCE OFFERS COUNSELING, MORAL
SUPPORT
While many sociology students are grateful to Jon Lorence for his
academic counseling, he feels the real thanks should go to his own
advisers.
“I always remember how helpful my professors were when I
was a student and how they encouraged me,” said Lorence, associate
professor of sociology and the Department of Sociology’s director
of undergraduate studies and recipient of the 2005 George Magner
Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising. “I
try to model myself after those patient and caring faculty who assisted
me in my educational career.”
Lorence focuses on communicating program requirements to the students
as clearly as possible. He also offers moral support during their
journey toward a diploma.
“I try to make them realize the importance of a UH degree,”
he said.
The award, which carries a $500 check and a plaque, is given to
staff and faculty members who demonstrate excellence in student
advising.
