NAME GAME LATEST SPORT AT INTRAMURAL
FIELD
From flag football games to
ultimate Frisbee contests, the University of Houston’s intramural
field buzzes with activity on weekday afternoons. For years, the
area was nameless, but it now has a real name -- Gertner Field.
The field was officially dedicated to UH donor Gilbert
Gertner during a ceremony Oct. 8 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness
Center (CRWC). In attendance was Gertner himself, as well as UH
President Jay Gogue and Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan, who
proclaimed Oct. 8 as Gilbert Gertner Day in Houston.
In 1980, Gertner donated four acres of land at the
corner of Cullen Blvd. and Elgin Blvd. to UH during the campus’
expansion toward Interstate Highway 45.
Gertner is chairman of the board and CEO of Worldwide
Petromoly, Inc. and is a longtime Houston philanthropist.
Approximately 3,000 members of the campus community
use the field each year. In addition to student intramural activities,
the field is the site of the Faculty and Staff Softball League.
"Mr. Gertner’s land gave the university
the opportunity to increase and improve its athletic facilities,"
said Kathleen Anzivino, director of Campus Recreation. "The
Department of Campus Recreation looks forward to making field improvements
such as lights and a small support building. This will increase
the number of UH community members who can enjoy the property. It
also allows us to improve the quality of programs we offer on this
field."
