WRC GIVES PARENTS OPTIONS FOR
FEEDING KIDS FUN, KNOWLEDGE

“Twinkle twinkle little star…” The famous nursery rhyme first published in 1806 is still one of the most recognized children’s songs today. Perhaps, that’s because the catchy poem also helps children learn how to make comparisons – in this case between a twinkling star and a sparkling diamond.

Having fun with children and teaching them at the same time is a skill for every parent, and the University of Houston’s Women Resource Center (WRC) is offering an opportunity to learn that skill at an upcoming brown bag lunch.

From noon to 1:30 p.m. July 30, the WRC will host “Have Fun

“Have Fun With Your Children (and teach them at the same time!):

A Women’s Resource Center Brown Bag Lunch” will be held in the WRC, Room 104 of the University Center Satellite.

Bring your own lunch, and the WRC will provide drinks. For more information, please call (713) 743-5888.

With Your Children (and teach them at the same time)!” for parents wanting to learn new techniques for teaching and entertaining their kids at home. Whether it’s singing songs, going places or working on crafts, parents need all the help they can get, and the WRC will introduce them to convenient ideas they can share with their kids.

Maria Gil, a a UH Child Care student assistant“We want to help parents come up with new ideas for how they spend time with their kids this summer,” said Maren Swope, graduate assistant in the WRC. “Most importantly, we want to spark more interaction between parents and children that helps to educate them while they aren’t in school.

Diana Mondragon, a consultant and parent educator with Early Connections — whose primary focus is on how and when technology best fits into the learning of a young child — will speak at the program. Mondragon, who has taught bilingual pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, will introduce parents to ways of talking, singing, reading and playing with their children every day. The session offers age-appropriate activities parents can do with their kids using ordinary items at home.

Barbara Burgower Hordern, author of “A Parent’s Guide to Houston” and writer for such magazines as Ladies Home Journal and Time, will explore the fun and exciting locations for children and parents to experience together. Besides the neighborhood swimming pool, there are many places where children can learn this summer. Sports facilities and working ranches are among children’s favorite places to visit.

Hordern’s 11-year-old son will attest to that. He will join her at the WRC and offer his own experiences at the program.
