UH, UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM TO
RECRUIT FIRST-TIME COLLEGE STUDENTS

Deciding on a major can be difficult for any college student, but for someone who is first in his or her family to attend college, these difficulties can be multiplied.

The University of Houston will reach out to approximately 50 such students when they host a daylong recruitment event with the Upward Bound Program June 14.

Designed to address these students’ concerns before they enter college, the event will address such topics as financial aid, admissions requirements and curriculum.

“A lot of times, when a student does not have other family members who attended college, they may not know the opportunity exists,” said Chris Turner, academic adviser in the C.T. Bauer College of Business. “We want to present that opportunity to these students and offer them advice on everything from applying for scholarships to getting involved in campus organizations.”

The Upward Bound Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, serves high school students from low-income families, from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree and first-generation military veterans preparing to enter postsecondary education.

The program strives to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from college. Students in the program receive instruction in reading, writing, literature, foreign language and other subjects.

While on campus, the students will tour the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, the colleges of business, architecture and technology, and the Moores School of Music.

To find out how to represent your college at the event, please contact Becky Connally, academic adviser in the University Studies Division, at (713) 743- 8995.
