BLAFFER OFFERS LUNCHTIME ART TALK
Blaffer Gallery aims to add
a little spice — and some art talk — to lunchtime at
the University of Houston.
With Blaffer’s monthly Brown Bag Lunch Tours,
faculty, staff and members of the community can visit the gallery,
bring a meal — beverages are provided — and participate
in discussions with local artists. At noon on May 27, the Blaffer
hosts a conversation with local sculptor Tim Glover regarding the
gallery’s current exhibit, “Margo Sawyer: Contemplative
Spaces.”
According to Terrie Sultan, Blaffer Gallery director,
all brown bag events at the gallery are casual and not restricted
to die-hard art aficionados.
“These events are for everybody,” she
said. “They’re meant to be very informal and offer people
a chance to meet artists and ask questions. They also give us a
chance to invite more people into the gallery and offer them something
different to do for lunch.”
This week’s guest speaker, Glover, is no stranger
to UH. Those wanting to get a glimpse of his work need look no further
than the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). Glover’s
“Healing Nature” is comprised of an outdoor sculpture,
the “Leaf Column,” just outside the CRWC, and the interior
“Leaf Canopy,” which adorns the center’s ceiling.
The next Brown Bag Lunch Tour will be at noon on
June 10 and will feature a discussion regarding Daniella Rosell’s
“Ricas y Famosas” hosted by Fernando Castro, curator
of photography at Houston’s Sicardi Gallery.
