Strategic Planning Discussed at Regents
Meeting
The University of Houston System’s (UHS) strategic
planning process continued at Tuesday’s special meeting of
the UHS Board of Regents.
Ed Hugetz, UHS assistant vice chancellor and UH
assistant vice president for planning and university outreach, presented
a set of system initiatives to the board. Among the goals that were
culled from previous strategic planning meetings were creating additional
teaching centers, bolstering system enrollment, developing strategic
partnerships and implementing a system-wide image campaign.
With a list of 26 system initiatives, Hugetz asked
the board to prioritize each goal based on its importance. During
the board’s retreat next month, the prioritized initiatives
will be reviewed and specific individuals, groups and offices will
be assigned the responsibility of acting on each goal.
“We want to set milestones, so we can review
the plans we made, the actions that came out of those plans, know
who was put in charge of these plans and whether the goals were
delivered,” said Hugetz.
Specific initiatives discussed at Tuesday’s
meeting included creating the system’s teaching/health science
facilities at the Texas Medical Center and increasing UHS’
global connections.
Hugetz added that some of the initiatives presented
in his spreadsheet are being enacted. Among these is the advanced
planning for construction of another building at the UH System at
Sugar Land that will foster a partnership with Wharton County Community
College.
Other initiatives on the list were dependent upon
state and federal legislative agendas such as UHS securing financial
support from the Texas Legislature and the U.S. Congress during
FY2005.
The strategic planning process began in February
with UHS faculty, staff and student leaders discussing university
and system goals at each of the system universities. The information
compiled from each of these meetings was presented to the board
during a retreat last month.
