Technology Prof Waite Honored with
Graphic Excellence Award
Jerry
Waite, associate professor of technology at the University of Houston,
recently was honored, with co-authors Gerald Fields and Gary Nichols,
at the 2004 Graphic Excellence Awards Reception in Houston. The
‘Best in Category’ award was given to the text “CMYK
Color: Visual & Digital References for Professionals,”
written by Fields, Nichols and Waite, with Waite additionally serving
as editor of the publication.
Written to help graphic artists better understand
the technologies that are used to reproduce their projects, the
text has been compared to a Swiss army knife for digital print production
and now will be entered into a national competition sponsored by
the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation.
Nationally renowned judges chose “CMYK Color”
from among hundreds of submissions from printers and publishers
throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The book was selected
on the basis of its nearly perfect printing and exacting tolerances.
The authors specced the book to very high standards based on Waite’s
work on international specifications known as General Requirements
for Applications in Commercial Offset Lithography (GRACoL). The
result is aesthetically pleasing and among the most technically
accurate ever produced, garnering accolades for its contents by
both professors and industry experts.
“‘CMYK Color’ is the best resource
for color printing that I have seen,” said Frank Romano, a
professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Adrian Bernagozzi, professor emeritus from Central
Missouri State University concurred, “The color practitioner
will find this book and the accompanying reference materials to
be an invaluable set of tools needed to comprehend and master the
application of process color reproduction.”
Commenting on the text’s value to better educate
with regard to graphic communications fundamentals, Malcolm Keif
of California Polytechnic State University stated, “‘CMYK
Color’ is an outstanding resource for practical color management,
color correction and production of accurate CMYK color images. The
flesh color guidelines and toolbox calibration scales make this
book a ‘must have’ reference for university-level color
theory classes. This manual can definitely improve color education
throughout the U.S.”
A UH professor since 1993, Waite has taught graphic
arts for thirty years and is past president of the International
Graphic Arts Education Association. For more information about the
