UH System launches strategic plan
process
By Mike Emery

As the University of Houston
System (UHS) prepares to launch a strategic planning process,
a series of public meetings will be held at each system university
to foster discussions among faculty, staff, students and community
members.
According to UH System interim Senior Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jerald Strickland, feedback
from all constituencies will be vital in developing a strategic
plan to bolster UHS’ role as a metropolitan system of
higher education.
“We’re going to seek ideas on
a system level and on a state level, particularly concerning
the accessibility, quality and cost of education,” he
said. “We also want to be responsive to our mobile and
diverse population.”
The Division of Academic Affairs was tasked
with developing this strategic planning process, and a steering
committee, comprised of representatives from each UH System
university, will actively guide its progress.
Serving on the steering committee will be
the UH system presidents, provosts, chief financial officers,
Faculty Senate presidents, the Staff Council president from
UH-Clear Lake and the UH System student regent.
The committee has been charged with developing
10 to 15 strategic principles, identifying partnerships among
UH system universities and reviewing the system universities’
missions to ensure they are aligned to one another. |

“The strategic principles that will be developed should be
priority statements as to the direction the system is headed,”
said Chris Stanich, UH System and UH executive director of planning
and policy and special assistant for governmental relations. “They
should also identify certain areas where it is mutually advantageous
for the universities to work together.”
Each meeting would showcase presentations from all
levels of UH System constituencies, including each university’s
respective administration, students, faculty, staff and alumni,
as well as external parties such as industry and community leaders.
There also will be an open-microphone segment for
attendees to offer input.
Based on its findings from these meetings, the steering
committee will compose a report that will be presented to the UH
System Board of Regents during its retreat April 18 and 19.
“These meetings are the beginning of conversations
at the system level that would collectively address issues and goals
from all university constituencies,” Strickland said. “We
want these meetings to explore the potential synergies between each
campus and between the campuses and their communities.”
