Poster Art Legend Jim Sherraden to speak at UH Scholarship Benefit

Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and B.B. King are only a few of the artists who have been immortalized in concert posters produced by Nashville’s Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest letterpress print shops in the country.

Since 1984, artist Jim Sherraden has helped the shop maintain its distinct visual style. Soon, he will visit Houston to discuss its legacy with the graphic design community.

Sherraden is the featured speaker at “Get Pressed,” an evening of live music and art sponsored by the Graphic Alumni Partnership of the University of Houston (UHGAP). Scholarships also will be awarded to UH graphic communications students during this event. “Get Pressed” runs from 6 – 9 p.m., Sept. 13 at Rockefeller Hall at 3620 Washington Ave. Admission is free for UH alums and $10 for others. Proceeds will benefit UH graphic communications scholarships.

Sherraden’s talents with the centuries-old art of letterpress printing have preserved Hatch’s unique method of producing handcrafted poster art. His original artwork also has revitalized the shop’s output by adding a modern feel to Hatch posters. He is the co-author of the book “Hatch Show Print: The History of a Great American Poster Shop,” which will be available for purchase at the event. Also available for purchase will be prints direct from the Hatch shop.

Hatch Show Print was founded in 1879 by brothers C.C. and H.H. Hatch. Initially, the company produced advertising posters for circuses, church events and household commodities. Hatch Show Print is particularly noted for its classic country music posters but continues to create new works for contemporary artists in all genres.
