Houston-
December in Houston is usually marked by falling leaves and dropping temperatures. It’s also the month when Houstonians can observe bold new works by a collection of rising art stars during one of the city’s most anticipated exhibitions.

The University of Houston School of Art annual Student Exhibition runs Dec. 1 – 15 in the university’s Blaffer Gallery. Works on view in the exhibition will include paintings, sculpture, video, ceramics, graphic communications, photography, jewelry and interior design. The public also will have the opportunity to visit the students’ studios and talk informally with the artists about their work during an opening reception at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30.

“This exhibition has become known for bringing fresh, new ideas to the table,” said Rachel Hecker, associate director of the School of Art. “Each year brings out the best in our students, and patrons always respond with excitement and enthusiasm to the range and quality of the works on display.”

A jury of UH art faculty selected the exhibition pieces, which were then installed in the gallery by Blaffer’s expert staff.

“Thanks to these artists, the university and the city can have excellent shows like this one,” said John Reed, director of the UH School of Art. “And thanks to these artists, local art enthusiasts can gain from their exploration, inspiration and perceptiveness.”

Patrons also have the opportunity to purchase students’ exhibition pieces. Interested buyers can ask the representative at Blaffer’s front desk for more details.
